government to provide a suitable hall, where the food can be properly served to the prisoners assembled together at tables. LUNATIC HOSPITAL. The committee visited the Lunatic Hospital at South Boston, on the 27th of June. There were in Hospital December 21st, 1871, the time of the previous visit, Remaining June 27th, 1872, time of last visit, Males Females ∞ 51 12 26 125 104 229 The causes of death were, Disease of Brain, Disease of Heart, Pneumonia, each two; Apoplexy, Epilepsy, Consumption, Chorea, Old Age and Suicide, each one. The sanitary condition of the Hospital has been good. The requirements of the law appear to have been fully observed and faithfully complied with. The Committee made their semi-annual inspection of Suffolk County Jail on Monday, June 24, 1872. The number of prisoners in jail at last inspection, Dec. 14, 1871, was 225 Total number of prisoners committed from Dec. 14, 1871, to June 24, 1872 2,290 2,515 2,337 178 Discharged from Dec. 14, 1871, to June 24, 1872 Remaining in jail June 24, 1872 Of the total number committed 48 were debtors. Two prisoners, viz., Levi Freidman and George Gallagher, each held for non-payment of fines and costs, were pardoned by the Governor of the Commonwealth. No death has occurred, and no one has escaped since last inspection. The Inspectors found the jail buildings in good order and repair, the prison clean and well ventilated, the prisoners healthy, and the jail well kept.
