PREFATORY REMARKS.

THE object of the following pages is to explain familiarly such points of physiological science as could not appropriately have been noticed in the "Guide to the Knowledge of Life," just published by the Author, on account of that little work being designed for a very general circulation, and to a great extent for the use of the young. The subject is nevertheless so treated as to be adapted for the reading of all intelligent and educated persons, who wish to understand the operations of Nature in their broadest and grandest relations, and to attain sound and accurate knowledge in matters that relate to the laws and conditions of life.
