The Colleges marked thus (*) are under the direction of the Baptists; thus (†), Episcopalians; thus (!), Methodists; thus (§), Catholics. With respect to the Colleges which are unmarked, the prevailing religious influence of those that are in the New England States is Congregationalism; of most of the others, Presbyterianism. By Instructors, in the above table, is meant those connected with the undergraduates; and by students, except the Roman Catholic institutions and a few of the Colleges in the Southern and Western States, is meant undergraduates, or members of the four collegiate classes; not including such as are pursuing a professional education, or such as are members of a preparatory department. Some of the Colleges above enumerated are not in full operation, and scarcely deserve a place in the table. The column of Libraries includes the number of vol. umes in the College Libraries and in the Students' Libraries. The above table shows the condition of the colleges near January, 1854, and 1855. Returns have not been received from some of the colleges to so late date. Any one noticing errors or imperfections in the list is requested to send the necessary corrections to the editor.
