CITY OF BOSTON.

In Board of Aldermen, Thursday, Feb. 12, 1857.

The Committee on Paving, to whom was recommitted the Report asking for an additional appropriation of Thirteen Thousand dollars, with "instructions to report, in detail, the character of the expenditures of the Paving Department, to date," would respectfully make the following Report:

The amount of the Paving Appropriation, for the financial year 1856-57, was $160,000.00. To this amount was added, to meet expenditures on Fayette street, the sum of $10,000.

The amount expended of this appropriation and addition, ($170,000.00) to January 1st, 1857, was $159,161.50. The balance of the appropriation, January 1st, 1857, was $10,838.50.

The amount charged to the appropriation, since January 1st, is $4,880.48, leaving a balance, February 1st, of $5,958.02. The amount of $4,880.48, charged since the 1st of January, was expended for labor, $2,882.14; grading First street, $669.75; grading Tremont street, $258.00; breaking open streets after the snow storm, $244.08; grade damages, $700.00; filling Fayette street, $42.97; repairing, lanterns, lumber, setting edgestones, (old bill,) &c., $83.54.

The amount of $159,161.50, charged to the appropriation for paving, for the financial year 1856-57, up to January

1st, 1857, was expended in paving, grading, repairs of streets, and grade damages, as follows:

Of the above amount, (159,161.50,) $21,719.09 was expended under orders which passed the Board of Aldermen prior to Jan. 1st, 1856. The balance, with the exception of the amount expended by the Superintendent of Streets, in the general repairs of the Streets, was paid out for work done under authority of orders which passed the Board of Aldermen last year.

The amount of thirteen thousand dollars, which the Committee have asked for, will be required to meet the expenses which have been incurred in removing snow and ice from our streets. The balance of the Paving appropriation now on hand, $5,958.02, will be required to meet the payment of the pay rolls of labor now due.
