The amount of Bills against sundry persons, for Abating Nuisances, Team Work, &c., which Bills, by an Ordinance, have been deposited with the City Treasurer for collection, is $22,781.27.

Having given a statement of the expenditures and receipts of this department, for the year 1856, I would now most respectfully call your attention to the following subjects:

Nuisances.

During the year 1856, there has been served upon persons having nuisances on or about their premises, 392 orders of notice to abate the same; out of this number it has been necessary to pass 41 orders of the Board, directing me to abate such nuisances, and charge the expense to parties neglecting the same.

Among the great variety of nuisances which exist in our city, and which seems to have received more than ordinary attention from this department, is the one of vaults; and these, in connexion with the erection of buildings for the poorer classes of people. In their erection, little or no regard seems to have been paid to the wants of such tenants, and the laws of the Commonwealth are wholly disregarded. They are not only dangerous in their construction, but entirely unfit for the purposes intended, both as regards ventilation, and the natural conveniences attendant upon such premises. I would most respectfully call your attention to a block of the above described houses, situated on Shawmut place, from Washington to Plymouth streets; and this is but one of the many cases that exist in our midst.
