THE FOLLOWING TABLE PRESENTS A SERIES OF LABORS NOT SUSCEPTIBLE OF CLASSIFICATION. * Truants are mostly committed to the Station Houses for safe keeping for the Truant Officers. All property found upon either prisoners or lodgers, is taken from them during their temporary custody in the station houses, and is restored to them when they leave, for which they receipt in a book kept for that purpose. Property which is retained as evidence, is restored 1,329 79 165 41 upon an order of restitution from the Courts, after the cases involving it are decided. The following table presents a view of the property transactions. Amount of property taken from prisoners and lodgers, while in temporary custody, and restored to them, as per receipts, Amount of property reported stolen in $44,802 44 parties prosecuted by the police, which fines are paid into the County Treasury, 23,496 04 Aggregate term of imprisonment imposed by the courts, 1255 years, 1 month. VII. EARNINGS OF THE POLICE. In the earnings of the Police Department are included fees received as witnesses in the Courts, accruing from cases prosecuted by them; fees for licenses; compensation for extra and special police duty, &c.; which earnings are paid into the Treasury. The following table shows the revenue for the past year. Amount of fees earned in the courts, and paid into the Treasury, $4,861 40 Amount received from hack, truck, auc tioneer, intelligence office, and dog licenses; from extra and special police duty, at amusements and other places, and paid into the Treasury, as per account of the Treasurer, If to this we add the amount of fines imposed by the courts, and paid into the Treasury, viz: 6,640 30 $11,501 70 23,496 04 We have the total earnings of the police, - $34,997 74 The expenses of the department would be much reduced if bills which are now paid from our appropriation, having really nothing to do with the police fund, were paid from some other source or appropriation to which they as properly belong. The expenses of carting city documents to the station houses for distribution; carting ropes, chains, &c., to restrain crowds on public occasions; physician's bills for medical and surgical treatment of prisoners, and injured persons brought to the station houses; removing prisoners, with other items of expense not mentioned, increase the amount, in the aggregate, to no inconsiderable sum. It will be seen in this Report that, since the occupancy of the lock-ups, which commenced on the 22nd day of April last, 6,182 persons have been there committed. |
