The old Winthrop School House, on East street, contains twelve rooms, only four of which are occupied for Primary Schools.

A contract was entered into, by which this building is to be warmed by a steam apparatus. If this method does not prove sufficient to heat the building, to the satisfaction of the Committee on Public Buildings, after two months fair trial, the contractors, by agreement, are to remove the same, without any cost to the City.

A contract was also entered into to heat this building

by steam, as in the case of the South Boston School

House; the Committee on Public Buildings for the year 1855, being of the opinion that if the steam apparatus could warm these buildings, it would produce a more beneficial heat than could be obtained by any other process. It was an experiment, and up to this time, so far as the Summer street School House is concerned, this method of heating has not answered the expectations of the contractors, but has entirely failed to accomplish the purpose for which it is intended. The contractors are now putting in additional works; and should these prove insufficient, the whole apparatus is to be taken away, and the City is secure from any liability therefor.

The Phillips School House has been altered and repaired, for the better accommodation of scholars, at a cost of
