Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away, and he released Barabbas unto them.

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it.

Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

LESSON LXXV.

MATT. CHAP. XXVII. LUKE, CHAP. XXIII. JOHN, CHAP. XIX. AND as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name him they compelled to bear his cross.

And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

But Jesus turning unto them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

For, behold, the days are coming, in which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, Cover us.

And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified him and two malefactors; one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE This title then read many of the Jews; for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

JEWS.

Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am the King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments (and made four parts, for every soldier a part), and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh, but he received it not.

And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

Likewise also the chief priests, mocking him, with the Scribes and elders, said, He saved others, himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be the Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering, rebuked him, saying, Dost thou not fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation ?

And we indeed justly: for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me, when thou comest into thy kingdom.

And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today, thou shalt be with me in Paradise.

And it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! and from that hour, that disciple took her unto his own home.

Now from the sixth hour, there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabacthani? that is to say, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me

?

Some of them that stood there, when they heard that,

said, This man calleth for Elias. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar, and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. The rest said, Let it be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished. And when he had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

LESSON LXXVI. ·

MATT. CHAP. XXVII. LUKE, CHAP. XXIII. JOHN, CHAP. XIX. AND, behold, the vail of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom: and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.

Now when the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was a righteous man, truly this was the Son of God.

And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.

And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him; among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day (for that sabbath day was an high day), besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Then came the soldiers and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs; but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came thereout blood and water.

And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true, and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again,

another Scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

And behold there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor ; and he was a good man, and a just: (the same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them :) he was of Arimathea, a city of the Jews; who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

This man went unto Pilate and begged the body of Jesus, (but secretly for fear of the Jews;) and Joseph besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore and took the body of Jesus.

And there came also Nicodemus (which at the first came to Jesus by night) and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, which was hewn in the rock, wherein was never yet man laid.

There laid they Jesus, therefore, because of the Jews' preparation day for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. And they rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre. And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

Now the next day that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

Command, therefore, that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as you can. So they went and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

LESSON LXXVII. MATT. CH. XXVIII. MARK, CH. XVI. JOHN, CHAP. XX. LUKE, CHAP. XXIV.

AFTER the sabbath was ended, as it began to dawn, toward the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene, and the

other Mary, to see the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared and certain others were with them.

And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

And behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: and for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

When Mary Magdalene saw that the stone was taken away from the sepulchre, she runneth and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

And some of the women entering into the sepulchre, found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.

And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here: for he is risen as he said. Come see the place where the Lord lay.

Remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

And the women remembered his words.

And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy, and did run to bring his disciples word.

When Mary Magdalene had told Peter, and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, that they had taken away the Lord, Peter went forth, and that other disciple, and came both to the sepulchre.

So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.

Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, and the nap
