Page 163 - For practical therapeutic purposes the beneficial effects of arsphenamine are most apparent in a limited number of spirochetal diseases. They act as a specific in Vincent's angina, relapsing fever, yaws, gangosa, and pulmonary spirochetosis (if given early) in man and in equine influenza. A therapeutic effect is noted in rat-bite disease, in certain dental conditions, and in fowl spirochetosis. The complete measure of the effect in the latter condition has not yet been established. No apparent benefit...

Page 213 - CONSERVATISM IN USE OF ARSPHENAMIN The last words of any discussion of the arsphenamins in therapeutics, should, I think, be an appeal for conservative interpretations. Particularly should such conservatism reign in the field of syphilis. Too short a time has elapsed since the discovery of these drugs, and too little is as yet known about the ultimate problems of the pathology, immunology and parasitology of syphilis, to justify the announcing of new infallibilities. The necropsy pathologist of the...

Page 163 - There is a limited effect on certain protozoal diseases, as malaria (tertian and quotidian), some of the trypanosomiases and leishmaniasis. It is possible, however, that this effect may be nonspecific. With the exception of anthrax, and possibly glanders, few favorable results are reported in bacterial diseases. Except in Vincent's angina, arsphenamin and neoarsphenamin should be administered intravenously in medium-sized dosage.
