El Paso, Tex.-Fire totally destroyed the stock of cigars and unworked tobacco of the J. & E. Cigar Factory and fixtures, valued at $3000.

CALMINE, THE NEW HYPNOTIC.

In medical circles throughout the country a good deal of interest and even enthusiasm over this new hynotic is noticeable. Very few drug products have attracted so much attention as this one.

A really satisfactory hypnotic and sleep-inducer which Calmine certainly seems to be has been awaited expectantly for many years. Of course, we have always had agents of this sort-a new one has come out at frequent intervals, but none of them have "filled the bill;" they have been prescribed only because there was nothing better to be had.

Calmine is sodium diethylbarbiturate in the language of the chemist. It appears as a fine, white, water-soluble powder with an alkaline taste. The Abbott Alkaloidal Co. of Chicago supply it in the form of 21⁄2 grain tablets, twenty-five in a package.

This new hypnotic induces a condition more nearly resembling natural sleep than any other known drug. It operates promptly. It acts gently, being a coaxer instead of a blunt, compelling hypnotic. It is followed by no bad after effects. It may be dissolved and administered per rectum when it is not feasible to give it by mouth. It is reasonable in price.

Calmine is being widely advertised and generously sampled. Although announced only a month ago, there is already considerable demand for it. From all appearances it is the hypnotic which every doctor will eventually be using.

Conspicuous among those present at the meeting of the National Wholesale Druggists' Association was the personage of Willis W. Russell of Milltown, N. J., president of the Willis W. Russell Card Co. In a few years Mr. Russell has built up a playing card business which is now National in its scope, sold only through the jobbers. The confidence he has in his product is not only evidenced by his name on every package, but in addition to this he puts his picture in every ace of spades and thereby vouchers safe for its endurance. X

EXPLOITING THE SOFT-MASS PILL.

It is no secret that the soft pill as developed by Parke, Davis & Co., was several months in the making. Much experimenting had to be done before the process was perfected. When success was assured, however, the company lost no time in acquainting physicians with the achievement. The advantages of the pills were at once presented in the various ways in which the company, through its exceptional resources, is enabled to get the ear of the medical profession. Prescriptions for pills "P. D. & Co., soft," soon began to appear in the drug stores of the country. Today there is an established demand for the goods, a demand that has been growing steadily for a good many weeks without any apparent stimulus in the way of concerted promotion work.

"Push the products that push themselves," is a commercial law of Parke, Davis & Co., and it is not surprising to learn that the extensive and varied advertising machinery of the company is to be put in motion with the object in view of making soft-mass pills (P. D. & Co.) known to physicians from one end of the country to the other. Full page space is being taken in the medical journals. Letters and literature are to be mailed to physicians. Detail men will be busy in the field. In view of this spirited campaign it is a safe assumption that there will be an augmented demand for Parke, Davis & Co.'s soft pills within a very short time, a fact which druggists may well bear in mind. The company now puts out twenty-eight formulas by the soft-mass process. The list appears in full in this number of Southern Pharmaceutical Journal and will repay a careful

study.

A SWINDLER ABROAD.

Hotels, druggists, physicians, iivery men and others, are warned against a man traveling from place to place presenting a card with the name "R. F. Hall" printed in the center. In the lower left hand corner are the words "Parke, Davis & Co." and in the lower right hand corner the words "Detroit Mich." This man is described as follows:

"Five feet 6 or 8 inches, 150 pounds, fiend for Turkish cigarettes, about 27 years, complexion medium, wears nose glasses and continually takes them

off and on; he is a swell dresser, good talker, fine appearance, wears one of those light colored slip on or off rain coats."

This individual has no connection with Parke, Davis & Co. and so far as heard uses the card to facilitate the passing of bogus checks.

Because of incidents like these nearly all concerns employing "drummers" forbid them to borrow money or seek credit, except upon individual responsibility and acquaintanceship. Therefore, those seeking credit or loans, especially from comparative strangers, on the strength of their alleged connection with some important concern, should be treated as imposters.

THE DRUG MARKET.

New York.-Reports of light trading have prevailed throughout the market during the week and dealers, as a rule, are reconciled to a gradual abatement of buying interest over the balance of the year. Price developments continue largely in favor of sellers, the principal enhancements being associated with short supplies. Opium scored a further advance in sympathy with primary conditions, the local market being in limited supply. Some of the refiners mantain an advance of one cent for C. P. glycerin, based on the increasing strength of crude and the cheaper quotations are but nominal, subject to con. firmation. Canada fir balsam was firmer on limitation of primary stocks. An active movement was reported in Mexican vanilla cuts below the parity of the cheaper grades of Bourbons. A revision in cubeb oil shows a lower range, competition having been stimulated by better supplies of berries. A firmer tone seemed to characterize the peppermint situation and a material strengthening of wormseed oil was occasioned by the lack of new crop offers and the reduction of available stocks. Short buchu continues to react, but no offers for new crop shipment have been traced as yet. A fairly good arrival of yerba santa failed to check the firming course of the market, the lot being reported well sold ahead. Dandelion root is held at higher prices in sympathy with conditions abroad. Ipecac remains firm. Jalap is easy and nominal, the crop outlook being reported favorable. The cheaper lots of Russian anise seed were cleared in a more active market. Strophanthus seed was firmer in sympathy with primary conditions, while caraway was easier under a similar influence and good spot supplies.

The census returns continue to show the growth of the South during the past decade.

The six principal Southern cities, in the order of their growth in the last ten years, follow:

Birmingham has a population 132,685, as compared with 38,415 in 1900, an increase of 245.4 per cent.

Atlanta, Ga., has a population of 154,839, as compared with 89,872 in 1900, or an increase of 72.3 per cent. Richmond, Va., has a population of 127,628, as compared with 85,050 in 1900, or an increase of 50.1 per cent.

Nashville, Tenn., has a population of 110,364, as compared with 80,865 in 1900, or an increase of 36.5 per cent.

Memphis has a population of 131,105, as compared with 102,320 in 1900, or an increase of 28.1 per cent. New Orleans, La., has a population of 339,075, as compared with 287,104 in 1900, or an increase of 19.1 per cent.
