From the Critic we copy the following announcements of forthcoming works in England:-Major Hauley announces seven sketches taken from the field of Alma, on the day after the battle. The prolific family of St. John promises another contribution to light literature, in the shape of a biography of the Louvre, by Bayle of that name. The Rev. Robt. Montgomery announces a versified companion to the English Prayer Book. Carleton has just produced an Irish novel called "Willy Reilly and his Dear Colleen Bawn." The Memoir of the Rev. Sydney Smith, is daily expected; also, William Howitt's new book upon Australia, and Capt. Osborn's "Narrative of the Discovery of the Northwest Passage," by H. M. S. Investigator. Dr. Doran

promises "Lives of the Queen's of England, of the House of Hanover," and Mr. Shirley Brook's novel of "Aspen Court," is to be reprinted from Bentley's Magazine. Mr. Routledge announces one novelty. The antiquarian, Planche, of extravaganza celebrity, pays a just compliment to the lady to whom he is so deeply indebted, and offers a new and perfect edition of the Countess D'Aulnoy's Fairy Tales," translated by himself, and illustrated

by the unequalled Gilbert. Mr. Planche declares that the British public have never before seen a perfect edition of these charming tales. Mrs. G. P. Everett Green, promises the "Letters of Queen Henrietta Maria," including her private Correspondence with Charles 1st. Guizot, an historical monograph upon Richard Cromwell, and the dawn of the Restoration. And Allison, the fourth volume of his continuation of the "History of Eu

rope." In science, we have the veteran Brougham collaborating with Mr. Routh, to produce "An Analytical View of Newton's Principia."

George Stanley; and, by arrangement with the au-

Literary Intelligence.

AMERICAN.

Mr. Trübner has been collecting a large number of American Military Works, for which there is now a large demand in Europe. He has been purchasing many works in Washington, and intends publishing a Catalogue of the most important books on Military Science, Art, and History, published in this country during the last forty years.

FOREIGN.

The Statue of the Poet, Campbell, by William C. Marshall, R. A., Sculptor, was recently erected in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, at a cost of £2,000, and has been much admired.

The Lowell Institute, of Boston, has invited

Mr. George William Curtis, author of the "Pot-
iphar Papers," to deliver one of its courses of
Lectures next winter, and he will prepare a
course of six Lectures on the "Modern English
Novelists."

The poet, James Russell Lowell, is just about
sailing for Europe, to spend a year abroad before
entering on the duties of his Professorship at
Cambridge. He will pass through France and
Germany, and after a residence of a few months
in Dresden, where Mrs. Putnam, his sister, the
learned writer on Hungary, is now living, will
then proceed to Spain, partly with a view of
traversing the localities made famous by the
great romance of Cervantes-following literally
in the footsteps of Don Quixotte.

It is rumored that Mr. Nathaniel Hawthorne contemplates resigning his office as Consul at Liverpool, at the end of his present year of service, as the salary of this office has been cut down about one half. He intends to travel for a year in Europe, and then return to the United

States.

The Cupola of the new Library and Reading Room of the British Museum in London, is larger than that of St. Peter's at Rome; and, with the exception of the Pantheon, is the largest in the world.

Charles Knight, taking advantage of the new stamp arrangement, is about to publish a twopenny sheet, to be called Charles Knight's Town and Country Newspaper."

The Statue of Peel, now almost ready for erection, is to stand at the western end of Cheapside, on the site now occupied by the Obelisk.

Sir Roderick I. Murchison, F. R. S., has consented to be nominated as the successor of the late Sir Henry de la Beche, to the various geological appointments held by the deceased.

Miss Mitford has left the bulk of her property (under £3,000) to a faithful domestic.

A question of copyright was lately brought before the Vice Chancellor. Mr. Lover, the au

Dr. Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, of Boston, has thor of "The Low-Backed Car," published the

song first in America and afterwards in England. A music publisher in the city reprinted the song without authority, and pleaded that he had obtained it from America. The Vice Chancellor decided in favor of Mr. Lover's claim, and restrained the unauthorized reprint.

The Royal Society has lately received a very important and valuable addition to its collection of Manuscripts, by a present from Mr. Edwin Canton, of a series of autograph letters from Dr. Franklin, Priestly, Sir Joseph Banks, How ard, and other well-known persons. Mr. Canton has had this collection in his possession since it was given to him, when he was about fourteen years of age, by his uncle, Mr. Nathaniel Canton. The letters were formerly in possession of Mr. John Canton, F. R. S., to whom several of them are addressed. One from Sir Joseph Banks is extremely interesting, as it accompanies a "piece of the new elastick substance" (India Rubber) which Sir Joseph gave to Mr. Canton. The collection, which Mr. E. Canton has placed in the archives of the Royal Society, at the suggestion of Mr. Weld, is in excellent preserva

tion.

The "Revue de Paris" has commenced the publication of a posthumous novel of Balzac's.

Napoleon the Third has founded a new section in the French Academy, under the title of "Politics, Aministration, and Finance, and by act of authority has thus introduced ten new members into the Institution, by which it is said a majority of voices will be secured to the Imperial Government. The new members, of course, will be selected as Politicians, and not specially on the ground of their literary attainments. The Emperor has offered the Academy a prize of £400, to be adjudged triennally to the work most deserving of reward. Thiers, Mignet, and De Tocqueville, not considering this small sum a sufficient compensation for the restraint of their liberty of speech, have talked of resignation.

The number of Americans in Paris grows larger every year, and the various national pro. visions for their enjoyment become annually more remarkable. American photographers, dentists, physicians, bankers, express agents, patent agents, and editors, have all found employment among their compatriots in the gay French capital. At the present time, not less than four reading-rooms, supplied with American journals, are open with more or less freedom to the public, through the liberality of the proprie. tors, Messrs. Green & Co., Livingston, Wells & Co., J. Munroe & Co., and Valentine & Co, all highly respectable bankers.

"The American," a weekly paper published in Paris by Chas. L. Fleischmann, Esq., late of the United States Patent Office, has reached its twentieth number. It gives much valuable information in respect to the Great Exhibition, and is otherwise highly serviceable to Americans on the Continent. Its conception is unique, and its prospects of success appear to be flattering.

The Paris journals announce that M. Leverrier, the director of the National Observatory of France is at present in Brussels, to coöperate with the director of the Belgian Observatory, in

determining by the electric telegraph the longitude of Paris and Brussels. These experiments will verify those made in 1853, for the determination of the longitude of Greenwich and Brussels, and in 1854, for the determination of the longitude of Greenwich and Paris.

The Journal des Debats" states that M. Lamartine, on the conclusion of his four volumes of the "Histoire de Turquie," intends to take a year's rest, and occupy himself with the superintending the cultivation of his landed property. For the last four years, this indefatigable man has devoted fourteen hours a day in pursuit of his literary labors.

The king of Prussia has presented to the Library of Trinity College, Dublin, "Denkmaler aus Ægypten und Ethiopea," by Prof. Lepsius, and "Alt. Christliche Baudenkmale von Constantinople, vom V. bis XII. Jahrhundert," by Prof. Salzenberg.

The Belgian government, some time ago, instituted a quinquennial prize of the value of $1,000, as an encouragement to Flemish literature. This prize has just been awarded to Conscience, the popular Flemish author.
