tail several circumstances of purely personal interest relating to the Duke of York, which are entirely omitted in the Cardinal's manuscript. Everything, therefore, favours the supposition that the Carlton House manuscript is more immediately the work of James; but at the same time there is every reason to regard the editing of that part of his Memoirs as a separate work, undertaken for the first time in compliance with the wish expressed by the Cardinal de Bouillon, and altogether unconnected with that complete revisal, of which, perhaps, he gave the first suggestion to the king. We know nothing, certainly, with respect to the authorship of this work; some attribute it to Louis Innes; and it has been affirmed to have been superintended by Dryden, probably the son of the poet of that name, himself also a poet, but of no reputation. We cannot but deeply regret the loss of the original manuscripts which gave the first impressions of King James himself. It is difficult to believe that the Memoirs actually existing were compiled with equal ingenuousness; experience had then taught the descendants and partisans of King James, among other things, the necessity of sometimes withholding what they knew. Nevertheless, this last narrative, incomplete as it may be, contains a great number of fragments unquestionably derived from the original author, and is in other respects so fully stamped with his ideas and feelings, that it would be difficult to find anywhere else so faithful a representation of them. 65.
