Large orchards of Oranges, Lemons, Apricots, Peaches and Pears are in successful bearing. Some of the vineyards bear TEN TONS OF GRAPES to the acre without irrigation.

The Land is divided into Forty-Acre Tracts,

Each forty acres fronting two roads, thus being readily divisible into one twenty and two ten-acre tracts, with proper road front. The water supply from the San Antonio Canyon, Artesian Wells and Cienegas is abundant and being well developed; the water is unsurpassed in purity, and softness, being the best water for domestic use in Southern California.

THE TITLE

To both Land and Water is unquestionable. The water will be conducted by the Company through the tract in pipes, and supplied for irrigation in heads of from ten to eighty inches, as desired. The land is generally level, sloping gently to the south, and is in quality a sandy loam, mixed more or less with gravel, being very similar to the San Gabriel soil for oranges, and with limestone sufficient to give it the fine grape-producing qualities of the adjacent Cucamonga vineyard.

THE CLIMATE

Equals if it does not excel that of any other point in Southern California. The location is peculiarly exempt from dry or boisterous winds and frosts, and is especially adapted to those suffering from throat and lung diseases, or those in generally delicate health.

The Southern Pacific Railroad

Passes through and along the land for a distance of more than seven miles, and the greater part of the land is within less than two miles of the railroad,

Riverside on the east, and Los Angeles on the west, are about equally distant. The tract comprises one of the Most Beautiful and Prolific Valleys in California, and has an average of one thousand feet elevation above the sea level.

All persons looking for Desirable Homes are invited to visit the tract, investigate and invest.

SUCCESSFUL FIRE INSURANCE.

The attention of merchants, business_men, property holders and insurers in general is particularly directed to the annual statements in another column of The Lion Fire Insurance Company of London, The Orient Insurance Company of Hartford, Conn., and the Washington Insurance Company of Boston, Mass., of which GEO. D. DORNIN is Manager, and WILLIAM SEXTON, Assistant Manager, for the Pacific Coast, with offices at No. 322 Montgomery Street. These three strong companies have a subscribed capital of $7,125,000, and assets aggregating $4,225,000.

The Lion Fire Insurance Company is the first of the English companies to file its annual statement with the Insurance Commissioner, as required by law. A synopsis appears in our advertising columns this morning. Notwithstanding the almost universal disasters to underwriting interests in 1884, this Company shows a gain over losses and expenses, and adds about $18,000 to its surplus account.

The Orient of Hartford is one of the few companies which has shown profitable results on the business of the past year, having increased its premium income, gross receipts and net surplus. Its coast business, under Manager Dornin and Assistant Manager Sexton. shows a gain of over 400 per cent. in premium income over the previous year. The Orient has $1,000,000 paid up capital and assets $1,474,443.10.

The Washington Insurance Company of Boston is one of the leading American millionaire companies. Its assets at the close of 1884 were $1,607.414.78. The aggregate income for 1884 was $873,458, and expenditures $841,074.82. The company shows a clean surplus over capital and all liabilities, including reserve for unearned premiums, of $83,890.60. The success of the past guarantees a large and increasing business on this coast for these strong companies during the present year, as they are under the management of successful and skillful underwriters.

THE GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL

So long looked for and so frequently announced, has at last been written.

Its title is

RAMONA :

A Story. By Helen Jackson, (H. H.)

The Atlantic Monthly says of the author that she is “a Murillo in literature," and that the story "is one of the most artistic creations of American literature." Says a lady, herself an author: "To me it is the most distinctive piece of work we have had in this country since 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' and its exquisite finish of style is beyond that classic." "The book is truly an American novel," says the Boston Advertiser. "Ramona is one of the most charming creations of modern fiction," says Charles D. Warner, in the Hartford Courant. "The romance of the story is irresistibly fascinating," says The Independent.

"The best novel written by a woman since George Eliot died, as it seems to me, is Mrs. Jackson's 'Ramona.' What action is there! What motion! How entrainant it is! It carries us along as if mounted on a swift horse's back, from beginning to end, and it is only when we return for a second reading that we can appreciate the fine handling of the characters, and especially the Spanish mother drawn with a stroke as keen and firm as that which portrayed George Eliot's 'Dorothea.'"-T. W. Higginson, in Harper's Bazar. Some enthusiastic Eastern critic finds in "Ramona" The Great American Novel. We had supposed that criticism had forgotten that title; but since it is still extant, we take occasion to say that while Mrs. Jackson's story is not the great American novel, it is beyond comparison the best California novel that has yet been written. Yet there is no breach of probability in it; the story unfolds itself as naturally as life. It is hardly like a novel with a plot at all; it is almost as if Mrs. Jackson were narrating some real history of the life of some one she had known. It is hard to say adequately how pretty and tender and complete it all is.-Overland Monthly. Large 12 mo., Cloth Gilt, Price $1.50.
