revealed." Some of the pilots attend our chapel, and I hope to see a gradual change among them for the better. I have preached four or five times on the pier during the summer; and I hope not without some good effect. On these occasions I embrace the opportunity of circulating tracts, and inviting their attention to the Sailors' Library."

NEW SERIES.

FOR DECEMBER, 1836.

MARITIME AND COLONIAL COMMERCE CONNECTED WITH THE EVANGELIZATION OF ALL NATIONS.

ILLUSTRATIVE OF ISAIAH LX, 8, 9.

DIVINE inspiration, in the prophets of God, evidently filled their minds with holy rapture, while they were led to contemplate the future enlargement and glory of the church. Their lofty conceptions-their sublime sentiments and their uniform, rational, and delightful descriptions, clearly prove the sacred origin of their glowing

excitement.

Isaiah, surveying the joyful scenes which he had described, with the increasing multitudes of willing converts, both landsmen and mariners, flocking to celebrate the ordinances of Divine worship, exclaims, or rather represents the church exclaiming, "Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as doves to their windows?"—Ver. 8. Aged Christians, permitted to witness the dawn of millennial glory, and acquainted only with the ordinary influences of the Spirit, will probably be filled with astonishment at the multitudes of converts, who will be seen crowding the gates of Zion, filling the sanctuary of God, and seeking admission into the Redeemer's fold. Plainly it is declared that such will be the case, as God has promised in a former chapter, to his mourning church, "Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold I was left alone; these, where had they been?"

VOL. III.

2 A

Isaiah xlix, 21. This inquiry is answered, teaching the church the means of such a glorious work. "Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders. Andikings shall he thy nursing fathers, and queens thy nursing mothers."

Ver. 22.

Infinite grace will thus raise up and furnish missionary standard-bearers to call the nations to Christ, and give their faithful ministry divine success in the conversion of multitudes of all classes and all ages, including peasants and princes, mercantile adventurers and those whose occupation is upon the mighty ocean.

Ships, colonies, and commerce," which in the judgment of the ambitious Napoleon contribute principally to make a nation great, will all be rendered tributary to the enlargement and prosperity of the church of God. Thus Jehovah addresses his awakened church, " Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee." Ver. 9.

Jehovah-Jesus is the speaker in this paragraph, giving this most cheering prophetic promise. Divine Providence, at a very early period in the apostolic age, conveyed the Gospel of Christ to many of the isles, whose inhabitants, degraded and maddened with idolatry, appeared in a great degree "a people prepared for the Lord." The Greek isles of the Mediterranean, as many have supposed, were chiefly intended by this passage: but, however important Cyprus and Crete, and others of the Greek islands were in the first age of Christianity, it would be a reflection upon the Spirit of inspiration to imagine that the application of these words is to be limited to them. If it may be thought that Isaiah knew nothing of Britain, yet doubtless the mind of God contemplated the British isles, whose Druid inhabitants waited for the Gospel, and received it, if not from the lips of the apostles themselves, yet from those of apostolic men; and many of the islanders became Christians. Now, however, the prediction seems especially to regard the important islands of the West the vast clusters of isles in Eastern and Southern Asiaand the unnumbered isles of Australia and Polynesa.
