One thousand and forty complaints have been made and recorded of violations of the Statutes and Ordinances during the year; 840 have been reported removed at an estimated cost of $19,986.

One hundred and forty-four complaints have been made and recorded of unsafe buildings and dangerous chimneys; 122 have been reported secured at an estimated cost of $15,155. * Three hundred and eighty-five complaints have been made and recorded of insufficient egress; 285 have been reported provided at an estimated cost of $68,480.

Two hundred and thirty-nine complaints have been referred to the Law Department during the year for legal action; 119 have been closed, and 120 are pending.

FOR THE YEAR 1902–1903.

SIR, - The Cemetery Department of the City of Boston respectfully submits its report for the fiscal year 1902–1903.

By an Act of the Legislature, chapter 375, of the year 1897, all burial grounds owned by, and in charge of, the City of Boston were placed under the control of the Cemetery Department.

The burial grounds, cemeteries and tombs which are owned by and in charge of the City of Boston, are as follows:

MOUNT HOPE CEMETERY.

Located in West Roxbury District, about five and one-half miles from the city proper. Additional land with dwellinghouse and other buildings on Berry street, bought in 1878 for $4,500, containing two acres; two lots of land on Berry street, purchased in 1877 for $856.59, containing 12,237 square feet, and parcels of land between Canterbury street and Mount Hope Cemetery, bought in 1901 for $14,733.76, containing four acres and 2,975 square feet;
