COLORADO.-Three months ended June 30, 1911. Population, 799,024. Total number of deaths from all causes 2,533, including diphtheria 15, measles 58, scarlet fever 21, tuberculosis 471. Cases reported: Diphtheria 170, measles 1,788, scarlet fever 514, smallpox 512, typhoid fever 142.

FLORIDA.-Week ended September 16, 1911. Reports from the State board of health show diphtheria present in 5 localities, with 6 cases, malaria in 3 localities with 10 cases, smallpox in 4 counties with 12 cases, tuberculosis in 11 localities with 20 cases, and typhoid fever in 5 localities with 10 cases.

IOWA.-Month of August, 1911. Population, 2,224,771. Total number of deaths from all causes 2,653, including diphtheria 12, measles 3, scarlet fever 4, tuberculosis 318, typhoid fever 102. Cases reported: Diphtheria 135 in 34 counties, smallpox 31 in 13 counties, typhoid fever 534 in all but 9 counties.

MARYLAND.-Month of July, 1911. Population, 1,295,346. Total number of deaths from all causes 1,081, including diphtheria 3,

measles 2, scarlet fever 3, tuberculosis 100, typhoid fever 18. Cases reported: Diphtheria 31, measles 76, scarlet fever 22, smallpox 1, typhoid fever 163.

MASSACHUSETTS.-Week ended August 5, 1911. Population of reporting towns, 2,565,623. Total number of deaths from all causes 750, including diphtheria 6, measles 2, scarlet fever 3, tuberculosis 59, typhoid fever 4. Cases reported: Diphtheria 78, measles 76, scarlet fever 51, tuberculosis 132, typhoid fever 63.

Week ended August 12, 1911. Total number of deaths from all causes 806, including diphtheria 6, measles 3, scarlet fever 2, tuberculosis 61, typhoid fever 4. Cases reported: Diphtheria 64, measles 56, scarlet fever 41, tuberculosis 122, typhoid fever 69.

Week ended August 19, 1911. Total number of deaths from all causes 760, including diphtheria 3, measles 2, scarlet fever 1, tuberculosis 74, typhoid fever 6. Cases reported: Diphtheria 88, measles 58, scarlet fever 46, tuberculosis 145, typhoid fever 82.

Week ended August 26, 1911. Total number of deaths from all causes 734, including diphtheria 7, measles 2, scarlet fever 1, tuberculosis 49, typhoid fever 5. Cases reported: Diphtheria 82, measles 46, scarlet fever 52, tuberculosis 101, typhoid fever 77.

NEW YORK.-Month of August, 1911. Population 9,113,614. Total number of deaths from all causes 11,553, including diphtheria 125, measles 54, scarlet fever 23, tuberculosis 1,267, typhoid fever 165. Cases reported: Diphtheria 1,337, measles 1,019, scarlet fever 480, smallpox 14, tuberculosis 3,023, typhoid fever 1,376.

TEXAS.-Month of August, 1911. Population 3,896,542. Total number of deaths from all causes 2,143, including diphtheria 23, measles 5, scarlet fever 5, tuberculosis 220, typhoid fever 97, typhus fever 1. Cases reported: Diphtheria 50, scarlet fever 23, smallpox 16, tuberculosis 72, typhoid fever 130.

UTAH.-Month of August, 1911. Population 373,351. Total number of deaths from all causes 276, including diphtheria 3, scarlet fever 2, smallpox 1, tuberculosis 7, typhoid fever 4. Cases reported: Diphtheria 29, measles 36, scarlet fever 62, smallpox 62, tuberculosis 7 (incomplete), typhoid fever 88.

FOREIGN AND INSULAR.

AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.

Status of Cholera.

The following information was received from Chargé d'Affaires Grew, at Vienna:

One fatal case of cholera was officially reported in Austrian territory from September 18 to 24. The case occurred at Prellenkirchen. In Hungary during the week ended September 23, 19 cases of cholera with 9 deaths were reported. Of these cases 3 each occurred in Budapest and Ujpest, the remaining cases being scattered. During the early stages of the outbreak in Hungary the disease appeared to be confined almost entirely to the personnel of the vessels plying on the Danube. Since these were placed under medical inspection no further cases have appeared among them.

Further information received from Chargé d'Affaires Grew, dated October 9, shows the occurrence of 29 new cases of cholera with 14 deaths in Hungary from September 24 to 30. Of these, 14 cases occurred at Ujpest. The remainder of the cases were scattered.

BULGARIA.

Cholera.

The following information was received from the minister of foreign affairs at Sofia:

Five cases of cholera were reported at Sosopolis, a port of the Black Sea, during the period from September 18 to 29. The cases were bacteriologically verified. The patients and contacts were isolated and rigorous measures adopted to prevent the spread of the disease to the surrounding country.

Further information received from the foreign office shows a total of 12 cases of cholera with 4 deaths at Sosopolis to October 7.

FRANCE.

Marseille-Status of Cholera.

Information has been received from the ministry of foreign affairs at Paris that from September 21 to 30, 20 cases of cholera, bacteriologically verified, were reported at Marseille.

According to information received from the American embassy at Paris, no case of cholera was reported at Marseille from October 18 to 26.

NOTE. No information has been received of the number of cases of cholera which occurred from September 1 to 20, and from October 1 to 18.

HAWAII.

Case of Plague at Kapulena.

Dr. Ramus reports, October 28, the occurrence of a case of plague at Kapulena, Hawaii.

Yellow Fever in Quarantine Employee.

Dr. Ramus reports, October 28, that a quarantine employee detailed as guard on the steamship Hongkong Maru has sickened with yellow fever. The Hongkong Maru arrived at Honolulu October 21 from Manzanillo, Mexico, with a convalescent case of yellow fever aboard. The vessel was placed in quarantine.

ITALY.

Status of Cholera.

Passed Asst. Surg. Robinson, at Naples, reports, October 10 and 18: During the period from September 24 to 30 there were reported in all Italy 454 cases of cholera, with 116 deaths, occurring as follows: Naples Province, 4 cases with 1 death; Naples city, 11 cases with 1 death; Genoa Province, 5 cases with 2 deaths; Palermo Province, 3 cases with 3 deaths; Palermo city, 14 cases with 4 deaths; Catania Province, 24 cases with 4 deaths; Catania city, 11 cases with 4 deaths; Rome Province, 63 cases with 19 deaths; Rome city, 4 cases with 3 deaths; rest of Italy (28 provinces), 315 cases with 75 deaths.

The cases and deaths reported for the province of Rome include 44 cases with 12 deaths, which occurred in a hospital for the insane at Gianicolo. The asylum was completely isolated to prevent spread of the disease.

During the period from October 1 to 7 cholera was reported in Italy as follows: All Italy, 336 cases with 89 deaths; Naples city, 2 cases; Naples Province, 5 cases with 1 death; Genoa city, 3 cases; Genoa Province, 1 case; Catania city, 17 cases with 3 deaths; Catania Province, 33 cases with 15 deaths; Palermo city, 4 cases with 2 deaths; Palermo Province, 11 cases with 4 deaths; Rome city, 12 cases with 7 deaths; Rome Province, 23 cases with 6 deaths; in 23 other provinces of Italy, 225 cases with 51 deaths.

The cases in the Province of Rome included 6 cases with 4 deaths in the hospital for the insane at Gianicolo.

Naples and Palermo-Examination of Emigrants.

Dr. Robinson reports:

The American consul reported November 1 the presence of 2 cases of cholera in the harbor of Malta. The cases were isolated.

MEXICO.

Yellow Fever at Merida.

During the week ended October 21, 1 case of yellow fever with 1 death was reported. The total number of cases from August 1, when the first case occurred, to October 21, was 36, with 14 deaths.

NEW ZEALAND.

Auckland-Examination of Rats.

The following information was taken from bulletins issued by the department of public health of New Zealand:

During the four weeks ended September 16, 423 rats were examined for plague infection. No plague-infected rat was found. The last case of human plague was reported May 8, 1911. The last plague-infected rat was found May 31, 1911.

ROUMANIA.

Summary of Cholera.

The following information was received from the director of the sanitary service:

From September 11, when cholera was reported at Braila, to September 19, there were reported 18 cases with 13 deaths. The cases were distributed as follows:

One case on board a tug arriving from Hungary, 1 on an Ottoman vessel stationed at Galatz, 1 in the commune of Regeli Carol, district of Tulcta, and the remainder in the vicinity of Braila.
