The latest and best Works on Turkey and Russia.
PUBLISHED THIS DAY,

A YEAR WITH THE TURKS;

Or, Sketches of Travel

In the European and Asiatic Dominions of the Sultan. By
Warington W. Smyth. With a colored Ethnological Map
of the Turkish Empire. 1 vol. 12mo., cloth, 75 cts.
"Mr. Smyth has had rare opportunities. Few men have
crossed and recrossed the empire in so many directions; and
many are the errors, the false reports, the misconceptions as
to fact or motive which are here corrected by an able and
impartial witness."-London Athenæum, Feb. 25th, 1854.

"Mr. Smyth's mode of traveling was well adapted to observe the character and condition of the people, as well as to form a judgment upon the mode of government, and its effects. Indeed, his object in publishing this volume was less to give an account of his journeyings, than to throw what light he could upon the Turkish empire and people. He has a pleasant, picturesque and direct style, and also, that knowledge of the past which is necessary to make travel profitable; but he does not overlay his subjects with history."-London Spectator, Feb. 25th, 1854.

"A witness worth listening to on matters whereon good evidence is particularly difficult to obtain."--Lond. Guard. "No work of a similar character, with the same lightness of execution, has conveyed an equally clear idea of the vast empire composed of so many disproportionate parts."London Critic.

His clear and rapid descriptions set objects before our eyes with unpretending vividness; and the notes he jots down are always worth attending to."-London Leader.

The Lamplighter.

THE GREAT AMERICAN ROMANCE! 20,000 COPIES IN TWENTY DAYS!!

We publish with pleasure the following strong Commendations of the Press.

"We have no hesitation in pronouncing The Lamplighter one of the most original, interesting, graphic, and affecting tales that has lately appeared. We predict for it a sale and popularity equal to the most successful of modern romances."-Daily Evening Traveller, Boston.

[blocks in formation]

By Mrs. HARRIET BEECHER STOWE, author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," &c. To be comprised in 2 vols. duodecimo, with numerous illustrations from original designs. (Ready in May.)

This, That, and the Other.

"For delicate and forcible delineation of character, this By Ellen Louisa Chandler. A duodecimo volume, with original illustrations. work is hardly excelled."-Boston Journal.

"The early life of Little Gerty, as portrayed in the 'Lamplighter,' is as deeply affecting as some of the best sketches of Dickens. The author, whoever she may be, has no reason to withhold her name, as the book would do credit to any writer."-Daily Adv., Boston.

"The Lamplighter' teaches important truths which cannot be too frequently impressed upon the minds of all— and no one can study its instructive and fascinating pages without being made better by its kindly influences. Its author has evidently a highly cultivated and refined as well as an original and imaginative mind, and writes with the ease, the classical correctness of diction, and that choice selection of terms which indicate the good English scholar. In this respect the Lamplighter' is much superior to Uncle Tom's Cabin, whose inelegancies meet us at every turn."-Boston Daily Atlas.

"It is one of the most affecting and interesting tales that has ever been issued from an American press."-Daily Tribune, Providence, R. I.

"This book developes a variety of characters, some of them as deeply affecting as the best sketches of Dickens, Little Gerty, Blind Emily, the good Lamplighter himself, Willie Sullivan, and others, are drawn by no unskillful band. We will not, however, forestall the reader's pleasure by a sketch of the story. It is a book which will be generally read, and we are sure it will not fail to give great pleasure to its readers."-Evening Transcript, Boston.

"The author of "The Lamplighter,' whoever he or she may be, has struck a note which will find a response in the public heart. It is a book which is destined to become a great favorite with the reading public."-Daily Herald, Newburyport.

"We predict for this book a GREAT SALE. It is written in that easy and graceful style which cannot fail to suit the most fastidious taste."-Olive Branch, Boston.

"Here is a book which is destined to have a sale unequaled by any other, unless we may except Uncle Tom. It is a most thrillingly interesting and deeply affecting work." -Mass. Life Boat.

"The aged and the young will rise from its perusal with an increased love for the kindlier and holier feelings of our nature, and be imbued with a noble spirit to resolve, to do, and sacrifice, if need be, for the promotion of human welfare. Gertrude kept her trouble to herself, and bore it in silence. Yet, by her patience and firm resolution, she persevered and triumphed."-Hingham Journal.

Extracts from the Press,

"We recommend our readers, male and female, to a perusal of 'This, That, and the Other,' as soon as it is given to the public, and assure them that they will never blame us for so doing."-Christian Herald.

"We are confident that she will produce a work far superior to any miscellaneous volume now before the public." -True Flag. "For the volume, judging from certain sketches destined for its pages which we have perused, we predict a large measure of success."- Windham Telegraph.

A WORK OF GREAT INTEREST.

The History of the Protestant Church in Hungary,

From the beginning of the Reformation to 1850; with reference also to Transylvania. Translated by Rev. J. H. Craig, D. D., Hamburg. With an Introduction by J. H. Merle D'Aubigne, D. D., President of Theological School, Geneva. To be comprised in one volume, duodecimo, of 500 pages. Price $1 25. (Ready in May.)

Extract from the Introduction, by J. H. Merle D'Aubigne.

I wish to recommend the narrative to the notice of all friends of the Protestant faith. No complete history of the church of God in Hungary has as yet been published. The work that we now offer to the public ought, therefore, to be considered worthy of attention, were it only for its novelty, but more particularly so on account of the labor that has been bestowed on its composition. The author is a man possessed of enlightened piety, sound judgment, integrity, faithfulness, and Christian wisdom-qualities well qualified to inspire perfect confidence. He has obtained his materials from the Government edicts, convent protocols, visitation reports, and oflicial correspondence, have all most authentic sources. been consulted with scrupulous attention, as is proved by the numerous quotations he cites. He has thus sought to place the authenticity of his book on an indisputable basis, and at the same time to render it impervious to the shafts of hostile criticism. It remains for the future to prove how far he has succeeded.

A NEW WORK BY ELIHU BURRITT.

Thoughts and Things at Home and Abroad.

By Elihu Burritt. To be comprised in one volume with his Life by Mary Howitt, duodecimo, with a Portrait. (Ready in a few weeks.)

PAUL CREYTON'S GREAT WORK.
Martin Merrivale, His X Mark.

By Paul Creyton, author of "Father Brighthopes," "Burcliff," &c.

The above will be published in semi-monthly numbers, and illustrated with engravings from original designs by Billings and other Artists. The same will be completed in about fifteen numbers. The author will give to the story an absorbing interest, and point it with an unobtrusive moral. The convenient size, the legible print, and the general attractiveness of the numbers will commend it to general favor with the public.

"The public has long been on the qui vive for this work. It is now out. Whatever good expectation may have existed in reason the book will more than justify. Its leading merits are a high moral excellence in style, and ceaseless interest. No author appears to claim the gems here put forth; but the pen that traced the lines, and the mind that filled them with sentiment, are of no common sort. We think the book is destined to great popularity, and that the By Cara Belmont. One vol. 18mo. Uniform with "Peep at No. 5," "Father Brighthopes," &c., &c.
