CITY OF BOSTON.

IN COMMON COUNCIL, March 23, 1871.

THE Joint Special Committee on Salaries, to whom was recommitted the report upon the salaries of the several city officers for the year beginning April 1, 1871, having carefully considered the subject would respectfully recommend the passage of the accompanying orders.

The only changes proposed by these orders, in the salaries established in 1870, are as follows:

For clerk hire in the City Treasurer's office, an increase of one thousand dollars.

The Auditor of Accounts, an increase of five hundred dollars; and for clerk hire in the Auditor's office, an increase of eight hundred dollars.

The City Clerk, an increase of five hundred dollars; and for clerk hire an increase of eight hundred dollars.

The Clerk of the Common Council, an increase of two hundred dollars.

The Clerk of Committees, an increase of three hundred dollars.

The Assistant Messenger, an increase of two hundred dollars. The City Engineer, an increase of three hundred dollars. The City Surveyor, an increase of three hundred dollars. The Water Registrar, an increase of five hundred dollars. The City Registrar, an increase of five hundred dollars. The Harbor Master, an increase of one hundred dollars. The Superintendent of Fire Alarms, an increase of five hundred dollars, and the use of a horse and vehicle at the expense of the city.

The Superintendent of Sewers, an increase of five hundred dollars.

The Superintendent of Public Buildings, an increase of three hundred dollars.

The Superintendent of Streets, an increase of three hundred dollars.

The Superintendent of Health, an increase of five hundred dollars.

The Superintendent of Lamps, an increase of five hundred dollars.

The Superintendent of the Lunatic Hospital, an increase of four hundred dollars.

The Superintendent of Mount Washington avenue bridge, an increase of two hundred dollars.

The Superintendent of Federal Street Bridge, an increase of two hundred dollars.

The Superintendent of Dover Street Bridge, an increase of two hundred dollars.

The Superintendents of Hacks, Trucks and Wagons, Pawnbrokers and Intelligence Offices an increase of fifty cents each per day.

The Chief of Police, an increase of three hundred dollars. The Chief Engineer of the Fire Department, an increase of three hundred dollars.

The salaries of the members of the new Street Commission are established at four thousand dollars each, per annum.

In fixing the pay for members of the Fire Department in Ward 16, the Committee were governed by the order recently passed by the City Council, to take effect April 1st.

IN COMMON COUNCIL, February 20, 1871.

ORDERED: That the salaries of the following officers, for the year beginning on the first day of April, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-one (with the exception of His Honor the Mayor), shall be as herein mentioned, to be paid monthly, subject to the deduction of any and all sums due from such officers to the city.

SECTION 1. The salary of the Mayor shall be as fixed by the convention of the City Council, on the twenty-first day of November, 1864: viz, at the rate of Five Thousand Dollars per annum, beginning with the first Monday of January; and he shall be allowed the use of a horse and vehicle at the expense of the city.

SECT. 2. The salary of the Mayor's Clerk shall be at the rate of One Thousand Eight Hundred Dollars per annum.

SECT. 3. The salary of the City Treasurer shall be at the rate of Five Thousand Dollars per annum, for performing the duties of City and County Treasurer and Collector; and there shall be allowed him the sum of Eighteen Thousand Two Hundred Dollars per annum, to be paid to his clerks. He shall account for all fees, moneys and commissions which he shall receive in his official capacity.

SECT. 4. The salary of the Auditor of Accounts shall be at the rate of Five Thousand Dollars per annum; and he shall be allowed for clerk hire the sum of Seven Thousand Five

Hundred Dollars per annum. He shall account for all sums of money received in his official capacity.

SECT. 5. The salary of the City Clerk shall be at the rate of Five Thousand Dollars per annum; and he shall be allowed

the further sum of Nine Thousand Six Hundred Dollars, to be paid to his assistant clerks. He shall prepare the annual voting lists, and shall account for all fees for recording mortgages of personal property, and for all other sums of money received in his official capacity.

SECT. 6. The salary of the Clerk of the Common Council shall be at the rate of One Thousand Eight Hundred Dollars per annum. He shall be allowed for clerk hire Eight Hundred Dollars per annum.

SECT. 7. The salary of the Clerk of the Committees of the City Council shall be at the rate of Three Thousand Three Hundred Dollars per annum. The salary of the Assistant Clerk of Committees shall be at the rate of Eight Hundred Dollars per annum. SECT. 8. The salary of the Messenger of the City Council shall be at the rate of Two Thousand Dollars per annum.

SECT. 9. The salary of the Assistant Messenger shall be at the rate of One Thousand Dollars per annum.

ORDERED: That the salaries of the following officers, for the year beginning on the first day of April, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-one, shall be as herein mentioned, to be paid monthly, subject to the deduction of any and all sums due from such officers to the city.

SECTION 1. The salary of the City Engineer shall be at the rate of Three Thousand 'Three Hundred Dollars per annum.
