In reply to yours of the 1st instant, the undersigned would respectfully submit that we deem the following to be the amount necessary to meet the expenses of the Ferry Department for the next financial year. viz:

The amount received for tolls the present year will not vary much from $160,000; as for the next year we can only reply that that will depend upon the action of the City Council.

IN COMMITTEE ON EAST BOSTON FERRIES, Feb. 23, 1871. The foregoing estimates have been carefully examined by the Committee on Ferries, and are approved, with the following amendments, namely: Reduce the items for wages and salaries to $55,000; and strike out the item for interest on ferry scrip, making the total estimate for expenses, including a new boat, $208,500. In view of the proposed abolition of tolls, no allowance should be made for income during the next financial year. WM. WOOLLEY, Chairman.
