To the Honorable City Council: GENTLEMEN, — In compliance with the fifteenth section of the ordinance relating to Public Buildings, I have the honor to submit the following REPORT. PUBLIC BUILDINGS. The expenditures for repairs, alterations, and improvements of public buildings, include all the buildings belonging to, or hired by, the city (excepting the School-houses and County Buildings) used for the accommodation of the city government, and the various departments. The amount expended on this class of buildings for the past year has been $94,786.68, as follows: Rent Fuel. $2,337 94 2,858 57 Care and cleaning 5,231 00 Alterations, repairs, water, gas, and furniture, 83,859 17 $94,786 68 COUNTY, BUILDINGS. There has been expended on County Buildings, $17,872.62, GRAMMAR SCHOOL-HOUSES. The expenditures on these houses for the past year have been $125,371.50, including the expenses of all the Dorchester School-houses. Of this amount there has been expended for The expenditures on these houses during the past year have amounted to $86,405.02, as follows: The extraordinary expenses of this department are those for the erection of new, and alterations of old buildings, for which appropriations are made by order of the City Council. The following is a list of the buildings in progress of erection: Grammar School-house, Ward 14, containing sixteen schoolrooms and an exhibition hall. Will be completed during the present month, and will cost, including furniture, about $112,000. Primary School-house, Sixth street, containing six schoolrooms. Will be finished during the present month, and will cost about $36,000. Paving Buildings, West City Wharf, comprising stable, crack shed, store rooms, and lodging rooms, for the use of the Paving Department. Will be finished next April, and will cost about $15,000. Girls' High and Normal School-houses. This building is completed, with the exception of the hall, which awaits the arrival of the Grecian frieze and statues presented by the Museum of Fine Arts. The building has cost up to the present time, $244,635.08. During the past year the following buildings have been completed. The cost of each building is annexed. Boiler and Fuel-house for Central Charity Bureau, 13,894 82 The following buildings, commenced by the town of Dorchester, came under the charge of this department in an unfinished condition, and have been completed during the year. The figures indicate the amount paid on each building by the city of Boston.
