In Common Council, May 11, 1871.

ORDERED, That the Annual Report of the Auditor of Accounts, for the financial year 1870-71, be submitted in print, and that five thousand copies thereof be printed; that four thousand copies be retained in the custody of the Auditor, at City Hall, for distribution, and that the remainder be placed in the several Police Station Houses, also for distribution; and further, that public advertisement be made of the fact, in the newspapers, that said reports have been placed in the Auditor's Office, City Hall, and in the several Police Station Houses, for distribution, where the citizens may obtain them on application.

TO THE HONORABLE CITY COUNCIL:

Gentlemen:

Conforming to the requirements of the ordinance on Finance, the undersigned, Auditor of Accounts, has the honor of presenting to the City Council his annual report of the Receipts and Expenditures of the CITY OF BOSTON and the COUNTY OF SUFFOLK for the financial year commencing May 1, 1870, and terminating April 30, 1871, both inclusive, with which is given information pertaining to the financial condition of the city, its public works, public buildings, property and taxes; also statistical information connected therewith, being the fiftyninth of the series.

During the year 1870-71, the payments of the City of Boston and County of Suffolk drawn for by the Mayor through the office of the Auditor of Accounts were as follows, viz. :

On account of the City of Boston,
On account of the County of Suffolk,

Total payments through the Auditor's Office,

To which add the payments by the Treasurer, which did not pass through the Auditor's office, to pay the State Tax, Interest and Premium, County of Suffolk, Militia Bounty, and Old Claims, the details of which may be found under the head of "Auditor's Aggregates," Board of Commissioners on the Sinking Funds, Total payments, as per Auditor's Accounts,
