THE Committee appointed to ascertain the amount of daily travel across the East Boston Ferry, have attended to that duty and

REPORT.

They have employed four competent persons who have attended to their duty faithfully, commencing with the first trip in the morning, about four o'clock, and closing with the last trip at night, which leaves the Boston side at 12 o'clock; there being no boat running from 12 o'clock at night till 4 o'clock in the morning. Soon after they commenced their labor a heavy easterly storm set in which lasted for several days, and by the following daily record it appears that there were very few fair days during the entire four weeks for which they were employed, and an easterly wind prevailed during the entire length of time. The remarkable contrast between fair and foul weather, as shown by the daily record, indicates that the travel was very light as compared with that during ordinary weather. Three boats are run only in fair weather, and in the day time.

Morning and evening the boats are very much crowded with foot passengers, and the houses, drops, and boats insufficient to properly accommodate so large a number of persons as necessarily cross the ferry.
