MIARRIAGES IN BOSTON IN 1902.

There were 6,172 marriages recorded as having taken place in Boston in 1902. This number is 138 less than the record for 19 () 1. so In 5,977 cases both contracting parties were white; in 166 cases both parties were colored ; in 25 cases the groom was colored and the bride white, and in 4 cases the groom was white and the bride colored. Seasons. June was the month in which the greatest number of marriages took place, 802 being the record for the month ; the least number was in March, 277. The greatest number of marriages for any quarter-year period was 1,764, in the second quarter of the year; the least number was 1,257, in the first quarter. Marriages by Religious and Civil Officials. – There were 5, 155 marriages performed by clergymen of the various religious denominations and rabbis, and 1,017 by justices of the peace.

Besidents and Won-Residents.

The number of persons who were recorded as having married in Boston in 1902 was 12,344 ; of these, 10,452 were residents of Boston, or 1 in every 56.32 of the population. The marriage rate was 17.7 per 1,000 of population. The non-residents married in Boston were 1,892 in number. In 4,772 marriages both parties were residents of Boston. In 474 marriages both parties were residents elsewhere in the United States. In 236 marriages the grooms were residents of Boston and the brides residents elsewhere in the United States. In 658 marriages the grooms were residents elsewhere in the United States and the brides were residents of Boston. There were 2 marriages between grooms who were Boston residents and brides residing in foreign countries. In 12 marriages the grooms were foreign residents and the brides were residents of Boston. In 12 cases the grooms were residents of the United States elsewhere than in Boston and the brides were residents of foreign countries. In 4 cases the grooms were residents of foreign countries and the brides residents of the United States elsewhere than in Boston. In 2 cases the groom and bride were residents of a foreign country.

Marriages of Colored Men and White Women.

There were 25 cases of marriage between colored men and white women, and 4 marriages of white men to colored women. Clergymen officiated in 12 cases of these mixed marriages, the balance being performed by justices of the peace.

MARRIAGES : AGES OF GROOMS AND BRIDEs. (TABLE XVI).

In 2,768 marriages, or 44.84 per cent. Of the whole number, the groom and bride were in the same division of age.

The number of grooms of 25 years of age and less was 1,743, or 28.24 per cent. ; the number of grooms between 25 and 35 years was 3,247, or 52.60 per cent. ; so that about 81 per cent. of all the grooms were married before reaching the age of 35 years. The number of grooms who were minors was 63, or 1.02 per cent. of the whole number of grooms.

The number of brides who had not reached the age of 25 years was 3,182, or 51.55 per cent. Of the whole number of brides; the number of brides who had reached ages between 25 and 35 years was 2,361, or 38.25 per cent. ; so that 89.81 per cent. of all the brides were married before reaching the age of 35 years.

The number of brides who were less than 18 years of age was 120.

MARRIAGES : NATIVITIES OF BOTH PARTIES. (TABLE XVII.)

There were 1,125 grooms who were born in Boston, or 18.22 per cent. of the whole number of grooms; there were 44 less Boston-born grooms than in 1901; 604 married brides who were born in Boston, 257 of the brides were born in the United States outside of Boston, 85 were born in Ireland, 114 in the BritishAmerican provinces, 30 in Great Britain, 11 in Germany, 7 in Italy, 1 in Russia, 4 in Sweden and Norway, 2 in Austria, 1 in Portugal, 1 in Holland, 1 in Belgium, 2 in Denmark, and 5 in other countries not specified in the table.

The grooms born in the United States (exclusive of those born in Boston) were 1,948, or 31.56 per cent. of the whole number of grooms; there were 90 less grooms of this nativity than in 1901; of their brides, 505 were born in Boston, 944 were born in the United States outside of Boston, 117 were born in Ireland, 296 in the British-American provinces, 53 in Great Britain, 8 in Germany, 6 in Russia, 10 in Norway and Sweden, 1 in China, of white parents, 1 in France, 1 in Switzerland, 2 in Denmark, 1 in the West Indies, and 3 in other countries not specified in the table.
