The greatest number of male decedents in any quarter-year period was 1,335 in the first quarter of the year; this number was 26.5 per cent. of the total mortality of male residents of Boston; the least number was 1,170 in the third quarter of the year; this number was 23.22 per cent. of the total mortality of male residents; the number for the second and fourth quarters was 1,223 and 1,310 respectively. The greatest number of deaths of females, residents of Boston, in any quarter-year period, occurred in the first quarter of the year, 1,327; this number was 27.29 per cent, of the total mortality of female residents; the least number for any quarter-year period was 1,145 in the second quarter of the year; this number was 23.55 per cent. of the total mortality of female residents. Won-Residents. – The greatest number of deaths of non-resident males in any month was 58 in September; the least number was 28 in January; the greatest number of deaths of non-resident females in any month was 39 in August; the least number was 15 in February. DEATHS. — AGE.-PERIODs, MONTHS, AND SEASONs. (TABLE VII.)

Infant Mortality.—There were 2,268 deaths of infants (under 1 year); divided into sexes there were 1,215 males and 1,053 females. These deaths form 20.6 per cent. of the total mortality. The greatest number of these deaths in any month was 244 in August, or 10.7 per cent. of the total mortality of this ageperiod; the least number in any month was 103 in June, or 4.5 per cent. of the total of this class. The males were 21.4 per cent. of the total mortality of males, and the females were 19.7 per cent. of the total mortality of females.

Infant Mortality: Seaces, Months, and Seasons. – The greatest number of male decedents, under 1 year of age, in any month was 139 in August; this was 11.44 per cent. of the total mortality of males of this class; the least number was 69 in June, or 5.68 per cent. of the total mortality of males of this class. The greatest number of deaths of females of this class in any month was 131 in August, or 12.44 per cent. of the total mortality of females of this class; the least number was 52 in June, or 4.93 per cent. of the total mortality of females of this class. The greatest number of deaths of male infants of this class in any quarter-year period was 383 in July, August, and September, or 31.52 per cent. of the total mortality of males of this class; the least number was in the second quarter of the year, 235, or 19.34 per cent. Of the total mortality of males of this class; the total number of deaths of infant males in the last half of the year was 700, or 57.63 per cent. of the total mortality of infant males. The greatest number of deaths of infant females for any quarter-period was 367 in July, August, and September; this number was 34.85 per cent. of the total infant female mortality; the least number was 187 in the second quarter of the year, or 17.75 per cent. of the total infant female mortality; the total of infant female deaths for the last half of the year was 632, or about 60 per cent. Mortality of Children 1 to 5 Years of Age. — The number of children between the ages of 1 and 5 years who died in 1902 was 1,096, or 10 per cent. of the total mortality. The greatest number of deaths of this class in any month occurred in April, 115, or about 10.5 per cent. of the total mortality of this class; the least number occurred in June, 76, or about 7 per cent. of the total mortality of this class. The greatest number of deaths in this class for any season or quarter-year period was 283, in the second quarter of the year, or 25.8 per cent. of the total mortality of this class. The least number for any quarter-year period was 261, in the first quarter of the year, or 23.8 per cent. of the total mortality of this class. Mortality of Children 1 to 5 Years of Age. Sewes, Months, and Seasons. – The division of sexes in this class of deaths is 568 males and 536 females; the greatest number of male deaths for any month was 56 in March ; this number was 9.33 per cent. of the total mortality of this class; the least number was 38 in January, or 6.7 per cent. of the total mortality of males of this class. The greatest number of female deaths of this class in any month was 60 in April, or 11.2 per cent. of the total; the least number was 33 in February, or 6.15 per cent. of the total. The greatest number of male deaths of this class for any quarter-year period was 150 in the third quarter of the year, or 26.4 per cent. of the total of males of this class; the least number for any quarter-year period was 135 for the first quarter of the year, or 23.7 per cent. of the total deaths of males of this class. The greatest number of deaths of females in this class for any quarter-year period was 142 in the last quarter of the year, or 26.4 per cent. of the total female mortality of this class; the least number for any quarter-year period was 126 in the first quarter of the year, or 23.5 per cent. of the total female mortal

ity of this class.
