number of decedents of more than 70 years of age in 1901 was 1,391, and this number was 12.3 per cent. of the total mortality of that year.

SExES AND AGE-PERIODs.

There were 5,668 male decedents, and 5,329 female decedents in 1902; there were 1,215 males less than 1 year of age, and 1,053 females of the same class, the former were 11.04 per cent. of the total mortality of all ages in the city, and the latter 9.57 per cent. ; the whole number of males who died at 5 years of age or less was 1,783, or 17.12 per cent. of the total mortality and 31.45 per cent. of the total mortality of males for the city. There were 2,973 male decedents between the ages of 20 and 70 years, or 52.45 per cent., and 574 males were 70 years of age or more at time of death, or 11.02 per cent. of the total mortality of males in the city. The whole number of females who died at the age of 5 years or less was 1,593, or 29.89 per cent. of the total mortality of females of all ages in the city. The whole number of male decedents in the city between the ages of 5 and 20 years was 338, or 5.96 per cent. of the total mortality of males — this was 19 less than in 1901 ; the whole number of female decedents of the same class was 289, or 5.42 per cent. of the total mortality of females — this number was 67 less than in 1901. Of the male decedents between the ages of 20 and 70 years there were 2,973, or 52.45 per cent. of the total mortality of males, or 103 less than in 1901; of the females of this class there were 2,652, or 49.76 per cent., or 5 less than in 1901. The male decedents of 70 years of age and over were 574 in number, or 10.12 per cent. of the total mortality of males, and 14 more than in 1901; the females of 70 years of age and over were 795 in number, or 14.90 per cent., and 36 less than in 1901.

DEATHS of ColoFED PERSONs. (TABLE II.)

There were 358 colored decedents in 1902, an increase of 9 Over the number for 1901; this includes all other than white persons, and among them were 21 Chinese and 2 Japanese. There were 201 males and 157 females. These deaths were 3.25 per cent. Of the total mortality of the year; 53 were less than 1 year of age, or 14.8 per cent. ; 94 were less than 5 years of age, or 26.25 per cent. ; 213, or 59.22 per cent. died between the ages of 20 and 70 years.

Of these colored decedents 21 were Chinese and 2 Japanese. Seventeen Chinese were in Ward 7, 1 in Ward 8, 1 in Ward 12, and 2 in Ward 22.
