THE

PREFACE

T

HE Great Cafe of Tithes, by Anthony Pearfon, having been long out of Print, and now Reprinted, we thought it might not be improper to give the Reader fome Account of the Author, and the Circumftances which occafion'd the writing of it.

Anthony Pearson was a Juftice of Peace in Weftmorland. He publish'd bis Treatife of Tithes in the Year 1657, which was fo well receiv'd by the Publick, that in about Two Years it pafs'd Three Editions.

The Cry of Oppreffion being great from divers Parts of the Nation, because of the fevere Profecutions for Tithes, the Author was excited to write on that Head, in Compaffion to the Sufferers; and to remove, if poffible by Reafon and found Argument, the Yoke and Burtben of Tithes from off the Laborious Huf bandman, and, otherwife, a Free People.
