NOTICE.

MICHELET, in the present volume, has told more completely than any of his predecessors the early history of the French Revolution, with all the indications of a revolutionary character, which had from time to time prevailed in France during the preceding century: devoting more than six hundred pages to what Mignet discharges in about fifty. On the other hand, Mignet is sufficiently full on all that concerns the later period, until the Restoration of the Bourbons. The two volumes, therefore, of Michelet and Mignet, as presented in the Standard Library, form desirable companions. Those who choose to go deeper into this important history may follow up Michelet with Lamartine's "Girondists,' adding, if they please, his "History of the Monarchy to 1830."
