to protect them from the dust. By unscrewing the handle cap the bristles part is removed and then screwed into the other end of the handle for use in lathering. The surplus water and lather drops through orifices at the base of the bristle-setting into the cup, leaving the outside. of the holder perfectly dry. These drippings may serve for a finishing shave. When the user is through shaving the brush is snugly fitted into the casing as indicated by dotted lines and is thus folded into a small compass for packing.

The fifth illustration shows an adaptation to sterilization. The bristles are carried by a sleeve consisting of two parts which surround the inner end of the tuft and clamp the same between them. This sleeve is held in clamped position by an outer casing. The tuft is released from the handle by pushing out the inner sleeve which when free from the outer holder or casing will fall open. The tuft may then be sterilized and replaced in the sleeve and holder. In the last figure a brush is represented whose improvement is in the setting. The bristles are solidly imbedded in soft rubber. A metal belt which is covered with a rubber ferrule binds the rubber

Pleasing Customers.

If a customer's purchase makes him think kindly of a store because of some little courtesy shown at the time the purchase was made, the store is doubly advertised - by the merit of the article itself and by the salesmanship with which it was sold. A good salesman is not the man who always makes a big sale. It is better to please a customer with a little than to sell him more than he really wants. The man who buys a little and is well treated returns repeatedly for other things, while the man who is pressed to buy more than he desires has enough of that particular store, most likely, to last him forever.-J. F. Hostelley.

An Iceless "Innovation."

The American Soda Fountain Company, Boston, announces that it is now prepared to furnish an iceless "Innovation." In offering the American "ice less," the manufacturers say they do not pirate the invention of others nor infringe any patent. Moreover, they claim the perfection of the iceless cooling under the patented system has been demonstrated by actual working under all possible conditions, and they are therefore prepared to guarantee perfect satisfaction as well as protection. Our readers are asked to send for a booklet now in preparation, describing this system.

The Department of Agriculture, Washington, has been investigating a proprietary preparation made in Dayton, Ohio, and labeled "Sartoin, a skin food." The formula on the label reads "2 ounces rose water, 4 ounces sartoin, 1 ounce cologne spirits, 16 ounces hot water." The "properties" claimed for this preparation were described as follows: "Produces a soft, velvety tint on the roughest skins and is remarkably effective in the treatment of pimples, blackheads, rash, blemishes and sunburn and chapped skin. Also highly beneficial for men's toilet after shaving; relieves all soreness and smarting."

A circular accompanying the bottle said " Is probably the most effective remedy known to science for sunburn, rashes, and all skin blemishes, as well as creating the normal growth of all parts not fully developed or shrunken. It is absolutely harmless to the most delicate skin,

and if persistently used will benefit the worst

pink dye

The statements appearing in the label on the product representing that it was a "skin food," that it would produce a "soft, velvety tint on the roughest of skins," and was "remarkably effective in the treatment of pimples, blackheads, rash- blemishes and sunburn, and chapped skin" were, according to the official report of the department, false, misleading, and deceptive in the following particulars: That there is no such thing as a "skin food " separate and apart from a food that nourishes all parts of the body; that the said article and preparatiod could not possibly be a food under any circumstances; that the chemical analysis thereof showed said article and preparation to be simply commercial magnesium sulphate colored with some pink dye; that the said commercial magnesium sulphate, commonly known as epsom salts is a mere purgative when taken internally, and when applied externally, as directed by the circular inclosed in each package of said article and preparation, could have no beneficial effect whatever; and that the said pink dye was not a food and in all probability would have poisonous effects.

The Ginger Bug.

Mr. Frank Farrington never writes himself out. His new little book "The Ginger Bug and Other Things" is very properly named, especially as to the ginger. It is only sixteen pages and cover, but in this small space is enough thought and spice to fill a large volume.
