FREQUENT mention is made in the sacred Scriptures of Olive-trees. The Hebrew name of this tree signifies "the splendour tree." It has this name because from its berries oil is derived, which affords a splendid light.

In the land of Judea, and the adjacent countries, in ancient times Olive-trees existed in great numbers. They were very extensively cultivated. In the southern, or warm parts of Europe, Olive-trees abound. Greece, Tuscany, Italy, Spain, and some parts of Africa, produce abundance of Olive-trees. Near to Jerusalem was the mount of Olives, which derived its name from the numerous Olive-trees which grew thereon.
