D. Halliday, efq. The lower part of the monument has the appearance of a tomb, to which the veftry door feems the entrance. In the centre of the monument is the infcrip. tion, in Roman capitals, on a fquare pilafter with an urn on the top; on which is a bafs-relief, reprefenting Benevolence cloathing the naked. On the left fide the monument is the figure the Lady Jane, and by John, Wiliam, of the deceased; on the right a female figure, with a dog at her feet; and in a kneeling pofture feems to reprefent Fidelity paying her devoirs at his tomb. The Major is dreffed in that cloathing which reprefents him as having put off mortality, yet fympathizes with and feels that attention which is paid to his memory. "To the memory of and of the Leafowes He was born Sept. 29th, 1749. youngest daughter of one daughter. was enlightened by ftudy, With native genius blefs'd, and liberal mind, and Francis, his furviving fons, as a teftimony of their affection for his virtues, and of deep regret for their own irrepara ble lofs." Memento mori. On "To the memory of JOSEPH HINCHLEY, gent. of Hales Owen, late furgeon in the fervice of the Hon. Eaft-India Company, who died at the Cape of Good Hope, on his voyage homewards towards his native country, the 21ftday of Jan. 1776, aged 51." On a neat monument againft the South wall: "In memory of for thine hour is at hand. On a finall ftone near the above: "Here lieth the body of ANN, wife of ELIJAH UNDERHILL. She departed this life Dec. 3, M.DCC.XIV. aged about 60. O that I could invent fo fweet a rhime, time: Now live and love, watch, pray, and ftill endeavour [ever, To please the Lord, and thou shalt live for Extarick joys featt bleifed fouls above, Clafped in arms of everlafting love." On a handfome monument near the font: "To the memory of in the common intercourfes of life becoming a Chriftian. in the 58th year of his age." On a large blue ftone, in the floor near the Welt end. "In memory of JOHN SCOTT HYLTON, efq. lae of Lapall boufe,. near Hales Owen, who died 23d. Feb. 1793; aged 67 years. A fafe companion, and an eafy friend. On a grave ftone, near the Southeaft corner of the church-yard, is the following infeription, written by William Shenftone, efq. "Here lies interred the body of ANN, the (lovig and beloved) daughter of SAMUEL and MARY POWELL of this town. in She departed this life on the xx1x day of July, year of our Lord M.DCC.XLIV, in the xxth year of her age. Here, here the lies, a budding role, ed before its bloom! innocence did fweets difclofe, She's from the ftorms of life reliev'd,.
