THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE,

Dr. RowLEY's extraordinary Account of a Dog, killed by fwallowing a poisonous Serpent.

T

HE merciful man is merciful to

had difappeared, probably hiding itfelf in the numerous cracks in the earth the dry fummer had caufed.

The circumftances were men tioned on the fame day, Sunday, true at dinner, but little attended to.

beaft, and mercy confifts in rendering our domeftic and affectionate animals as happy as their fituation admits. The faithful canine race merit the fportfman's and gentleman's humane attention. On this principle, I beg leave to communicate an extraordinary inftance of the death of a beautiful and affectionate young fpaniel; a fpecies of dog I have always kept, and who have always rewarded my attention by their diftinguifhed fagacity, attachment, and fidelity.

CASE. In the latter end of laft month, October 1803, and before that period, a canine difeafe raged, and indifpofed many dogs, and fome died in confequence. Many, however, were cured by two grains of tartar emetic diffolved in four table fpoonfuls of water, giving a teafpoonful, more or lefs, according to the age and fize of the dog. If purging happened to continue, prepared chalk in their water cured many.

The fpaniel mentioned was in the field adjoining my pleafant little villa at Kentish town, near the Obfervatory, and was perceived to attack fomething. On infpection it proved to be fome, fpecies of Inake, or ferpent, coiled up, defending itself against the dog; but before the young gentlemen, three of my pupils at the St Mary-le-bone Infirmary, could get a ftick from the hedge to defroy the reptile, it

About a week after, the young fpaniel dog went into the field again, accompanied with a large Newfoundland dog of the finest breed in England, who guards 'my houfe, garden, &c. The young dog was very active after birds, and traverfed the ground with his ufual activity and fpirit. Colonel Williams, chevalier of the order of Maria Therefa, who commanded the flotilla on the Rhine, &c. in the late war, was prefent, to whom I had given the dog to take to Vienna.

On the 2d of November 1S03, the dog was fuddenly feized with ftrong convulfion fits, whilft I was giving fome orders to the gardener. He howled, fcreamed, foamed at the mouth, barked violently, and feemed in great agonies. Suppo fing he had fwallowed fome leaves, herbs, or h horfe chefnuts, which fall in the autumnal feafon, or fomething that irritated and inflamed the ftomach, he was ordered fome caftor oil, which operated, and dif charged black feces, but without utility. The convulfions, fereams, mournful howlings, barking, foaming at the mouth, and fometimes vomiting, continued with little refpite for near four days, until the 6th. The lamentable fcreams, frothing, groanings, and appearances of excruciating pains contimuing, he died in great agonies; but, when out of the fits, was fenfible and very affectionate. I or
