not expect that the lesson of water protection would be learned by other towns and cities, but that such outbreaks would continue to occur. Thus far our gloomy prediction has been fulfilled. It now remains to be seen where the next terrible visitation of a preventable disease will

occur.

THE REVIEW'S INDEX MEDICUS.

The Index Medicus which we have published monthly since the founding of this journal, 13 years ago, is a very complete index of the leading articles from the medical journals of the world, and each of the 15,000 subjects indexed annually carries the journal in which it appeared, date of publication, page, and name of author. Each month's index is of the publications of the preceding month. The readers of the REVIEW are therefore enabled to see at a glance the papers they may desire to read, and we

will secure for them any article indexed for the price of the periodical containing it. This is the practical side of the index which is of great value to thousands of our subscribers throughout the country.

Permit us to suggest that it is often difficult to obtain a copy of an old journal which may be out of print. You should only order from a very recent index.

We must often order foreign journals from the publishers, and about six week 3 should be allowed for securing an order from abroad.

Orders for medical periodicals printed at any time can usually be filled by us, but in case we find it impossible to supply such a back number we will finally notify

you.

We know that our Index Medicus is invaluable to any physician who reads, and if he orders such articles as he desires to read through this office, he will soon appreciate the great practical value of the MEDICAL REVIEW OF REVIEWS.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

The Presidency of the New York State Society. Owing to the refusal of Dr. Edward L. Trudeau of Saranac Lake to act as president of the Medical Society of the State of New York, on account of illhealth, under Section 2 of Chapter VI of the by-laws, the first vice-president in numerical order, Dr. Arthur G. Root of Albany, becomes the president for the year 1908.

American Gastro-Enterological Association will hold its 11th annual meeting at Chicago, Ill., June 1 and 2, 1908.

Prof. William T. Sedgwick, '77 S., of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been elected Medical School orator at Yale, according to an announcement made by Dean Herbert E. Smith, '79 S., at the commencement exercises in celebration of the 95th anniversary of the Medical School next June.

His subject will be "Preventive Medicine and the Public Health." The address will be delivered before the graduating class of the Medical School and all others interested, in College Street Hall

on Monday afternoon, June 22, at 5 o'clock.

Professor Sedgwick is one of the most prominent graduates of the Sheffield Scientific School. After receiving his bachelor's degree at Sheff he continued his studies at Johns Hopkins University, receiving the degree of doctor of philosophy there in 1881. He was an instructor in biology in Sheff for one year, and fellow and associate in biology at Johns Hopkins for one and three years, respectively, and has been at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1883 as assistant, associate and full professor of biology. He was biologist to the Massachusetts Board of Health from 1888 to 1896, and has been curator of the Lowell Institute of Boston since 1897. He is the author of "General Biology," published in 1886, the standard work on the subject.

An Interesting Year's Work.-The Scientific Temperance Federation, at its annual meeting just held in Boston, received reports showing that during the year its collection of scientific and other data on the alcohol question has been increased by the addition of over 1000 books, pamphlets, abstracts and references. These were gleaned from German, French, Swedish, Italian, English and American sources, such as medical and other scientific publications, private contributions by authors, consular and other Government reports. This special library, regularly catalogued and indexed, is held at the disposal of every organization, student or social worker desiring information on the alcohol and narcotic questions. The library has been widely drawn upon to furnish information requested by physicians, educators, editors, Congressmen, lawyers, clergymen, social and temperance workers in this and other countries.

The secretaries reported also the prep

aration and publication of over 1,200,000 pages of scientific and educational matter relating to this special subject, a correspondence of more than 6000 letters to all parts of the United States and to 13 foreign countries, and the issuing of a press circular containing scientific facts to editors representing a wide range of interests and several millions of readers. Particular emphasis has been laid upon education as the rational method for securing permanent results in the temperance reformation.

Communication has been opened with many of the most active and best-known organizations in social improvement through the membership in the Scientific Temperance Federation of leading members of such organizations. Among its corresponding members are Prof. E. Kraepelin, professor of psychiatry, University of Munich; Prof. A. Aschaffenburg, formerly of Heidelberg University, now editor of Criminal Psychology and Penal Reform Monthly, Cologne; Dr. Max Kassowitz, professor of pædiatrics, University of Vienna; Dr. Reid Hunt, chief of Division of Pharmacology, United States Hygienic Laboratory, Washington, D. C., and Mr. Walter H. Edwards, F.C.S., London, England.

The officers elected for the ensuing year were William C. Lilley, Pittsburg, Pa., president; Mrs. S. S. Fessenden, Boston, vice-president; E. L. Transeau, Boston, recording secretary; Cora F. Stoddard, Boston, corresponding secretary; Robert H. Magwood, Boston, treasurer. The directors are Dr. T. D. Crothers, Hartford, Conn.; E. O. Taylor, D.D., Boston; Mrs. A. J. Gordon, Boston; Dr. T. Alex. MacNicholl, New York; John Herbert, Esq., Boston; W. A. Mowry, Ph.D., Hyde Park, Mass.; John Marshall Barker, Ph.D., Boston; Rev. Richard Wright, Cambridge, Mass. The head
