1 The populations were estimated upon the rate of growth from 1900 to 1905. Those of Taunton, Gloucester, North Adams and Clinton were allowed to stand as in 1905, having shown no increase during the five-year period. The gain in the population of Lowell is due to the annexation of a part of the town of Tewksbury. The population of Lawrence by the census of 1905 was 70,050, but, owing to the building of the new Wood and Arlington mills, employing at present some 2,500 operatives, an increase of about 6,000 is estimated by the Lawrence board of health, or 76,000. There will undoubtedly be a further increase by the end of the year, as these mills take on more help.
