"""PHE Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides," was first -I- published in the autumn of 1785, twelve years after the Tour itself. During these years, the manuscript had been in Boswell's possession, though it was occasionally lent to intimate friends. It is well known, however, that Johnson had seen and read the portions of it, as they were written and submitted to him by Boswell. The Tour at once achieved success: three large editions of it were printed and sold in less than a vear.
