A detailed, punctilious description of the way the brutality of the German invasion of Poland, Russian and the Baltic States spiralled into genocide. Difficult to read but necessary to dispel some of myths that have accrued round the Holocaust, noticeably that idea that it was all the work of a few evil men: evil men there were but there were also a host of men who accepted, did not protest or passively assisted. Read with the same Author's "Ordinary Men". ( )
